Mavericks Waive Dwight Powell After 12 Seasons

An era in Dallas ended Monday. The Mavericks waived veteran center Dwight Powell, the longest-tenured player on the roster, to finalize the 15-man roster ahead of Wednesday's regular-season opener at the Houston Rockets. Powell, 35, joined Dallas in December 2014 as part of the Rajon Rondo trade and played 763 games with the franchise — 266 starts — averaging 6.5 points and 4.2 rebounds in 17.5 minutes per game. "Dwight was the consummate professional throughout his 12 seasons with the Mavericks," said president of basketball operations Masai Ujiri, praising a player whose impact "extends well beyond the basketball court and into the Dallas community." Kyrie Irving turned emotional at the news, saying the team was better because Powell was there. Guards Seth Lundy and John Poulakidas were also waived over the weekend. If Powell clears waivers Wednesday afternoon, he becomes an unrestricted free agent. The opener tips off Wednesday at Toyota Center in Houston.

Cowboys Lose Linebacker Dee Winters to Achilles Strain

The hits keep coming for the Cowboys. Linebacker Dee Winters is expected to miss time after suffering an Achilles strain during the second quarter of Sunday's 23-13 loss to the Packers at Lambeau Field — the team's third straight defeat. Team executive vice president Stephen Jones said Monday on 105.3 The Fan that Winters "will likely miss time." Winters, who started all six games this season, was forced out shortly after grabbing the team's first interception of the year, a pick of Jordan Love. Elsewhere in the Monday fallout: returner KaVontae Turpin (ribs) is unlikely to play in Week 7, and questions continue to mount around head coach Brian Schottenheimer and the struggling offensive line. The 2-4 Cowboys head to Philadelphia for Monday Night Football on Oct. 26.

Early Voting Enters Day Two Across North Texas

Early voting for Texas' Nov. 3 midterm election continues today — day two of the Oct. 19–30 early-voting window. In Dallas County, sites run 7 AM–7 PM Monday–Saturday and 12–6 PM Sunday, Oct. 25. Registered voters may vote at any early-voting location in their county. On the ballot: the U.S. Senate race between Ken Paxton and James Talarico, the governor's race between Greg Abbott and Gina Hinojosa, plus congressional, legislative, judicial, and local contests. Bring an accepted photo ID. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3.

80s Return for a Dry, Warm Week

North Texas gets its warmth back. After cool mornings in the 40s–50s, today's high reaches near 80°F under sunny skies, with 82°F expected Wednesday and low-to-mid 80s — possibly 85–86°F in spots — through the weekend. A ridge of high pressure is firmly in control, blocking rain entirely; the forecast carries zero precipitation all week, with light east-southeast winds at 5–10 mph.
